Driveway Culverts

culverts

In the Town of Farmington, we are already preparing for winter and have had some communications regarding driveway culverts.  A driveway culvert is part of the homeowner's responsibility and therefore we'd like to make sure it's understood that before winter comes, these areas might call for some attention and upkeep, to ensure they are functioning properly.

There have been a number of areas scattered around the town where washouts and large masses of ice built up last winter where the town roads and driveways meet. The source of the problem is usually the absence of or failure of a driveway culvert.

  • Driveway culverts and the headwalls on each end of the culvert are the complete responsibility of the property owner.
  • If the culvert is clogged or not functioning properly, it is the responsibility of the property owner to clear the obstructions.
  • If the culvert is collapsed or structurally compromised it is the responsibility of the property owner to repair or replace the culvert.
  • If the headwalls have collapsed or deteriorated, they too are the responsibility of the property owner for repair and maintenance.

Your cooperation in maintaining the driveway culverts is appreciated as it is necessary to prevent excessive and expensive damage being done to the town roads.  We have been working diligently all summer, utilizing the beautiful weather as often as possible, to repair, improve, and maintain the roadways around town.  Should you have any questions regarding this matter, please call the Highway Department at 603-755-4884.
